Smiling, he pointed with his head toward the end of the pier. “Let’s hurry. It’s almost time.”

  “Time for what?”

  “You’ll see.”

Barefoot, we strolled the pier, slowly making our way to the edge. Beni and I walked in silence while enjoying our little snack. I still couldn’t believe the corn tasted as good as it did.

“Where you from? You American, yes?” He interrupted the quiet as we reached the end of the pier and found a spot on a bench near the left side.

“I’m from a small town in Texas. It’s a college town. You’ve probably never heard of it.”

“I don’t know much about Texas. Other than we used to own it.” He grinned as he chucked his now empty cup in the trash bin.

Remembering my history lessons, I realized that he was right. “You know, I’d totally forgotten about that.”

Beni’s smile caught me off guard again. Absentmindedly, I played with the spoon in my cup. I’d finished its contents, yet hadn’t thought about throwing it out. Beni was distracting in more ways than one.

“If it wasn’t for the Mexican-American War of 1846, you could be a Mexican citizen right now.”

Lost in my ogling of his face, hair, and body, I’d completely missed what he’d said. I was too busy imagining the dirty things I wanted to do to him. Vivid images of us naked in bed filled my vision. I fantasized about his lips on my sensitive skin, and his callused fingers circling my sweet bud.

  “Sofia?”

  “Huh?”

  “Where did you go?

“Nowhere. I’m right here.” I blinked and shook my head in an attempt to focus.

“Your body is here.” Beni scooched closer. “But your mind isn’t.” Slowly, he reached for my hair and pushed it behind my shoulder, exposing my neck.

“I promise not to get distracted again.” I whispered as I felt the warmth of his breath along my skin.

“Hmm. You shouldn’t make promises you cannot keep.”

A loud explosion rang above our heads and the sky lit up like the Fourth of July. A second and third bang followed, along with accompanying flashes of red, green and white. The view of the horizon and the shimmering fireworks was magnificent. Although startled at first, I quickly recognized the situation for what it was: a celebration. The most spectacular display I’d ever seen.

“Today is Benito Juarez’s birthday,” he said by way of explanation. “He’s one of the best presidents we’ve ever had.”

“Oh, I didn’t know. That explains the flags all over the city.” I smiled at his excited face.

“It’s a very special day. My mother named me after him, you know.” His arm snaked around my waist as he leaned in.

“So your full name is Benito?” I was sure the Spanish pronunciation of his name sounded much better than the English version, but I couldn’t stop the laugh that erupted after hearing myself say his name.

Beni smiled at me. “You think my name is funny?”

“No! Not at all.” I tried to keep a serious face. “It’s just… it sounds… it’s the way I’m saying. It’s all gringo.”

A snort escaped my throat as I gasped for air, causing another fit of giggles. Beni’s amused stare fed the humor of the moment and I just couldn’t control myself.

“I’m sorry!” I spurted between breaths. “It really isn’t you. It’s me.”

As I tried to catch my breath, Beni’s gaze turned from amused to aroused, his eyes captivating mine once more. “I’m gonna kiss you now.”

The fireworks continued in the background, feeding the fireworks going off in my head. Best. Kiss. Ever. He was gentle and soft, taking his time to taste and explore me with his tongue. My lady bits responded to his tender touch, causing a flood of hormones to swirl all over my body. We lip-locked for what felt like hours. In reality, it’d only been a few minutes. This could have turned into a public display of private parts, if it weren’t for Beni’s inhuman restraint.

  “We should probably go.”

“You are such a tease!” I whined.

Beni stood and pulled me with him. Our swollen lips from the heavy make-out session needed a break, so he held my hand and guided us back to the beach. As we resumed our stroll, we talked about our jobs, our hobbies, our goals for the future. I told him about my fear of failure and he shared his big dreams. It was as if we were on a date, the amazing fireworks adding a sparkle of romance. Beni told me his big family celebrated all Mexican holidays with tons of food. Our chat flowed easily and we rarely had any lulls in the conversation. Every once in a while, he would stop and kiss me. Each time, Beni left me more and more stunned and horny. He was just irresistibly sexy.

Sometime after midnight, we walked in the direction of my resort, which sat only a few blocks away from the fancy club where we met. My cabana suite faced the ocean and had a comfy porch swing at the front. Around the side, a shower stall allowed us to clean our feet before entering the room.

Standing by the suite door, I looked in his eyes and all rational thought vanished from my brain. I brought his face to mine and kissed him. We got lost in the moment again. His hands explored my back while mine dove into his brown tresses. Beni’s now familiar groan fired up my desire.

Without breaking our kiss, I dug in my bra and took out my keycard. Beni walked me backward, until my back hit the bright red door. He took the card from me and swiped it on the lock. Still lip-locked, we walked into my room and let the door shut on its own.

As soon as the door closed, I felt self-conscious. This behavior was totally unlike me, yet here I was. In a foreign country. With a handsome, sexy waiter in my room. A sexy waiter whose lips now moved to the base of my neck, and whose hands roamed my body freely.

Beni must’ve perceived my hesitation because he pulled away and placed his hands on my cheeks, concern and desire marring his beautiful features. “Are you sure about this?”

My hands immediately fidgeted in front of me, a tinge of anxiety traveling up my arms and down my back. “I’m sorry… It’s just… I never do this.”

  “Do what?”

“Go home with strangers.” I turned away from him and shook my arms in an attempt to release my tense muscles.

“But I’m not a stranger. You know everything about me already.” Returning his smile, I rolled my eyes at him as I plopped on the couch.

“You know what I mean. We just met and we are… we’re…” I couldn’t find a word that would make me less of a floozy. His intense gaze was distracting.

  “Why me?”

  “What?”

“Why did you pick me? Out of all those people in the club, why me?”

  “Because you captured me?”

“I captured you?” I was a little confused.

“Ehh, maybe that’s not the right word. When you walked in the club with your friends, I felt your energy. I couldn’t stop looking at you.” Beni sat on the couch next to me, but didn’t touch me.

  “What do you mean?”

Shifting his body in my direction, he explained. “It’s like, the noise and the lights, everything, just went away. All I could see was you.”

  Is he for real?

As my muddled brain processed his words, Beni placed a hand on mine, scooting a tad closer to me. “Sofia, we don’t have to do anything if you don’t want to. I’m not that kind of guy.”

Five minutes ago, I was ready to tangle and tumble with this guy. Now, I’d let my doubts kill the mood and I had no idea how to snap out of it. Beni’s thumb drew circles on the palm of my hand, sparking tingles of awareness all over my body. I closed my eyes and focused on the sensations. A few deep breaths helped calm my mind. This was spring break. I was allowed to have sex. Wild, hot sex with a gorgeous man.

Images of us making out on the beach flooded my mind, causing a piercing wave of desire to crash over my body. Goosebumps spread across my skin, heightening my sensitivity to his touch. As if on cue, Beni’s
hand traveled up my arm slowly, his fingers barely grazing my skin.

So this is how I snap out of it!

I took another deep breath and exhaled. My eyes opened slowly, landing on Beni’s. Emboldened once more by the hunger and desire pooled in his gaze, I stood up and slowly climbed on his lap. Poor Beni was getting mixed signals, but I didn’t care at this point. I’d decided I was going to forget about everything and just live in this moment.

With me on his lap, Beni couldn’t hide the growing tent in his pants. The last time I’d felt it, it was pretty big. Now, it felt massive. As I adjusted my knees comfortably on the couch, my movements created a delicious friction in our happy spots, eliciting a low growl from Beni.

  “Sofi, are you sure?”

  “Yes.”

Without another word, he unzipped me, and untied the strings at the nape of my neck securing the top of my dress. He pulled it off me, exposing my bare chest and lacy thong. Beni’s eyes bulged as he took in the view and muttered some more Spanish words. In a flash, his mouth had trapped my left nipple, while his hands landed firmly on my ass. Instinctively, I buried my fingers in his soft, long hair, pressing him to my super-sized boobs. He lapped, licked, nibbled, and suckled each breast and nipple thoroughly. Probably the best attention the ladies had ever had.

I rocked my hips as he continued his ministrations on my swollen nipples. My pussy was starting to feel neglected, so I ground myself into his erection to start that exquisite friction again. I tried to undo the buttons of his shirt but he stopped me.

  “Let’s go to the bedroom.”

He didn’t wait for a response. Beni stood effortlessly as I clung from his neck, and my legs wrapped around his waist. I couldn’t resist taking his lips into mine for a searing kiss. I couldn’t wait for what I knew would be a passionate night.

“Which way?” Beni asked when we broke our kiss for a breath. I pointed with my head in the direction of the bedroom and pressed my lips to his neck, letting my tongue travel up his jaw to his ear.

This man walked with the fierce determination of a bull. I could tell he wanted this as much as I did. In a few long strides, he made it to the bedroom and gently lowerered me to the bed. Beni stood at the foot of the bed watching me intently.

Resting up on my elbows, I examined him in return. “What are you waiting for?”

“I’ve been waiting for this moment all night. Since I first saw you.” His left hand caressed the top of my right foot as he spoke. “Now that I’m here with you, I don’t want to waste a minute.”

The next several hours could only be described as passionate and magical. Beni ensured that my every desire was met. In return, I surrendered to him completely. It was well worth the wait.

I had been dreading this day for months, and not because I hated weddings, but because I would be forced to see my ex for the first time in six months, and because I would have to make a speech in front of three hundred of Brad and Erica’s closest friends.

It was a beautiful spring day—not a cloud in the sky and all of the flowers in the gardens were beginning to bloom. I had spent most the afternoon helping her get ready to walk down the aisle to her perfect match. But when I wasn’t doting on Erica, I was doing everything I could to calm my nerves.

The day before the wedding, I told the kids in my second-grade class that my sister was getting married and that, like them, I got nervous too. They decided to remind me of the words I used to encourage them when they were nervous.

“You are one of a kind and everyone here is cheering you on. You can do this.”

I smiled at their sweet innocence because, while I said this to lift them up, in the real world those words held little weight. At least not for me. Still, I kept repeating them over and over, hoping that it would become my mantra and give me strength.

And as I finished up my speech, I realized that I had made it through without losing my composure.

“Erica, I love you with all my heart. Not only are you my big sister, but you’re also my best friend and the best human being I know. And Brad, I don’t think I ever met anyone worthy of my sister until you came along. The bond you two have is undeniable and I can only hope to have a love like yours someday,” I said as I toasted the new couple.

And then my weakness and self-doubt crept in because somehow, in the middle of all the wedding chaos, my eyes landed on Trevor. My ex was sitting at a table in the back of the reception hall. Fortunately, a strategically placed purple-and-white centerpiece allowed me to pretend that the date he had brought didn’t exist. But as she rested her head on his shoulder, smiling happily, a stab of pain pierced my heart. Flashes of the time we spent together had me on the verge of tears, so I quickly returned my attention to my sister and her new husband.

Most people couldn’t tell that we were even related. Her with blond hair and fair skin, me with my brown hair and medium complexion, most people thought we were friends. She was slightly shorter than my five foot six inches, but her outgoing personality always made her seem bigger to me. Then again, maybe it was just because I admired her so much.

“To Erica and Brad,” I said, raising my glass in the air. “May you have a lifetime of happiness and love. We should all be so lucky.”

Erica stood up and walked over to hug me while her wedding guests applauded my toast. She wiped her eyes and wrapped her arms around me.

“I love you, Bianca,” she said, squeezing me tightly. “I hate you for making me cry, but I mostly love you. Thank you for being here with me today.”

“Are you kidding? There’s nowhere else I would be. Thank God you chose spring break to do this so I have time to recover,” I laughed, trying to lighten the mood before sipping my champagne.

“All part of my plan to whisk her away and have her all to myself,” Brad said, joining us and kissing his new bride.

“I love you guys,” I said, swiping away a stray tear. “So much. I really am so happy for you.”

The DJ walked over and took the mic from me as he said something, but I was too distracted to hear it.

I glanced around to find my mom, but she and Dad were in the middle of talking to some old fiends and I didn’t want to interrupt. The hardest part of the night was done. I’d said my speech and made it through, except for that little Trevor hiccup. And then I spotted him again with his date, smiling and talking in close proximity to each other. I had a feeling they knew each other pretty well.

I hurried over to my mom when she had finished talking. She was smiling through her tears and I hugged her tightly.

  “That was beaut
iful, honey,” she gushed. “You have always had a way with words.”

  “Thank you, Mom.”

As she released me from her hold, she studied me briefly and the proud smile she wore transformed into a look I’d grown to hate. I knew what was coming next, and inside my body I began to cringe.

“Are you okay?” she asked, studying me closely.

I hated that question. It was one people posed when they knew you weren’t okay, but they didn’t know what else to ask. I nodded, but she knew better and reached out to hold my face gently in her hands as she stared at me lovingly.

“I’m sorry…I have to get out of here.”

“Leave? Your sister’s wedding? Why would you do that?”

There was no reason I could give that would be good enough, and I tried to correct my mistake.

“I’m just…” I trailed, looking around until I saw Trevor again. He was alone and looking directly at me, but I quickly gave Mom my attention again. “I just meant I have to go freshen up,” I lied.

“You look stunning,” she said just as Elliot arrived at my side, wrapping his arm around my waist. “Purple is definitely your color.”

Erica insisted that my dress be different from the rest of the bridesmaids’, mine being the only one that was strapless. My shoulder-length brown hair was twisted into loose curls, pulled back with a single jeweled clip. Luckily my sister wasn’t too picky about hairstyles, and this one suited me.

“Nice speech, Bee,” Elliot said before looking at my mom. “It’s a great wedding, Mrs. James.”

“Erica and Brad look so happy,” she said happily.

Elliot was a friend of Brad’s, actually the best man, and a really nice guy. A month after Trevor and I broke up, Brad set me up on a date, though I was in no condition to meet anyone. I was still nursing the wound of a two-year relationship coming to an abrupt end. I always thought Trevor and I were on the same path as my sister and Brad.
